How to stop the Gmail signature piling up at the end of a long thread?

NOTE

This guide is intended only for existing Xink clients. It will not apply if Xink.io does not manage your email signature.

By default, Gmail may place your email signature below quoted text in replies and forwards, often preceded by the characters --. You can change this behavior.

This formatting separates your message from the signature, but it may reduce visibility or make it appear less professional in reply threads.

How to Move Your Gmail Signature Above Quoted Text

Gmail includes an option that allows your signature to appear directly after your latest reply, instead of below the quoted thread.

Default Behavior

By default, Gmail places the signature at the very bottom of the message, even below quoted content in replies or forwards. While this is fine for new emails, it may not be ideal for replies.

Steps to Change the Setting

  1. Go to your Gmail Settings (click the gear icon).
  2. Select the General tab.
  3. Scroll to the Signature section.
  4. Check the box that says:
“Insert this signature before quoted text in replies and remove the ‘--’ line that precedes it.”
  5. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

Gmail signature checkbox setting

Once enabled, your signature will appear directly after your reply and above the "--" marker, making it much more visible in conversation threads.
