IT Pro: How To Install and Configure the Xink Transport Agent for Exchange on prem (2/2)

This is part 2 of the article series about Installing Xink Exchange Connector (part 1)

We assume that the Exchange Connector is installed and is functional. See the previous article about how to install the Exchange Connector.

In this article, we will install the Exchange Mobile Gateway (Transport Filter) on your Exchange Server. The purpose of this is to connect your Exchange Server with the local SQL Server which contains the imported users and their signatures. You can then set up rules e.g. "Replace 'Sent from my iPhone' with my default signature in Outlook" and when an email is sent from a mobile device connected to the Exchange Server, then the signature is replaced with the one in Xink (via Exchange Connector).

Install the Exchange Mobile Gateway

  1. Download Installer Xink_exchange.zip
  2. Unzip and Install the MSI-file as administrator.
  3. You need to provide the connection string to the settings database during the install wizard. Use the connection string from the configuration of the Exchange Connector.
    Make sure that you have a connection to the database from your Exchange Server: 
  4. When clicking 'Finish' the files are installed.


Verify Xink Agent is applied correctly and running as transport agent.

To verify run Exchange Management Shell as administrator 'command shell' on your Exchange Server and run the Get-TransportAgent commandlet:

As you can see, the Xink Agent appears on the list above as one of the transport agents.
The details shown can vary for different Exchange Server versions but the principle is the same, Note: Xink agent may appear as eMailSignature Agent.

Now you can start Setup mobile rules within Exchange Connector Configuration interface.

Setup mobile rules

Mobile Rules are used at the Exchange Gateway.
When an email is sent, the filter analyses the text and finds out if a signature needs to be replaced.

The Exchange gateway searches the email body for text rules created in Mobile Rules.
If a rule text is found, it will be replaced with the user’s default signature at the Exchange Gateway.

What's next?


You create a test rule by clicking the “Add new rule” button.  
Enter a name and a description for the rule.  In the rule text field, enter the text to be replaced.  

For example, you may put “((EMAILSIGNATURE))” during the test so that only users with this text string are affected. The Exchange Filter will then replace “((EMAILSIGNATURE))” with the user’s default signature when an email is sent.

Then what?

When tested OK, then add other rules like 'Sent from my iPhone', 'Get Outlook for Android', 'Get Outlook for iOS' etc. which replaces the default mobile email signatures for the devices in your environment.

To confirm that you have set everything up correctly, you need to enable at least one rule and send an email with the rule text.


Remember: iPhone's built-in email app sends new emails in plain text format. It is therefore important that you have designed a plain text formatted signature for all your default signatures in Xink portal. Otherwise, it will not replace the rule text with anything.
